It is our utmost heartfelt sadness and sympathy to the victims of the recent dreadful earth quakes and floods which have devastated some parts of the world and this is with no exception to our area - Indonesia and Philippines. This dreadful natural disaster has caused thousands of people homeless, lost of life and properties.

Let us joint together in thoughts and prayers for these victims and may God protect their own families and hope for the speedy recovery from these traumas they suffered.

Welcome To 9th Area Conference In Kuantan

Haii friends

By now everyone of us are getting ready and looking forward and set to go to the conference. I arrived in Kuantan at 10 this morning together with the delegation of WI Brunei Darussalam. On my flight to Kuantan, I met The Area President of Southern Africa, The Queen Mother, Kingdom Of Barforkeng, Dr Semane Bonolo Molotegi.

We are very greatful and honoured because HRH The Crown Princess Azizah of Kuantan was at the airport to welcome the Queen Mother and me as well as delegates from Brunei Darussalam.

Just to recap my reminding in the last posting, please make sure bring along your 25 words of greeting message and society report.

New information received from the Conference Organizing Committee, "Everyone is requested to wear PINK dress during the Welcoming Dinner on the 9th May 2009".

Conference Update

Dear Fellow Members

I have just came back from Kuantan, Pahang, and please to inform you that everything goes on as planned. The Conference Organizing Committee is pleased to welcome to this beautiful city of Kuantan.

Due to certain circumstances the venue of the conference has moved from Hyatt Regency to Swiss Garden Resort & Spa. I have stayed in this hotel and I am happy with the facilities provided. The location and information of this hotel are shown below.

I am here again after a long silence, this is due to I am involved with the Her Majesty Trophy Badminton Tournament organized by Women Councils Of Brunei Darussalam (the umbrella body of women organization in Brunei Darussalam).

Area Conference Venue, Accomodation & Fees

Kuantan, the capital city and main administrative center of the state of Pahang Darul Makmur, lies on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, about 170 miles east of Kuala Lumpur - the capital city of Malaysia - and 215 miles north of Singapore.

It is situated on the banks of the Kuantan river mouth, facing the South China Sea. This town is the gateway to the delightful east coast states of West Malaysia.

Populated mainly by the Malays, Chinese and Indians, you will also find in the outskirts, communities of the indigenous people (known as "Orang Asli" in Malaysia), some living the modern way while others maintaining their traditional lifestyle.

Getting There

By Car

Kuantan is about 3 - 4 hours drive by car from Kuala Lumpur or if you coming from Singapore, you can take the scenic coastal road from Johor Bahru to Mersing passing through Kuala Rompin and Pekan and then up north to Kuantan.

By Bus and Taxi

There are many express bus services operating from Singapore and from all major Northern and Southern Malaysian towns to Kuantan. The fares cost less than RM50.00 (US$1.00 = Around RM3.70) depending on the standard of the coaches and distances travelled.

Taxi services are also available from the Southern most city of Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and all major towns for slightly more fare.

By Air

If you prefer to fly, it will be just around 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport, a modern airport located about 15 km away from Kuantan town.

The Government owned Malaysia Airlines (MAS) operates daily flights to and from Kuala Lumpur airport.

By Train

Well. very sorry, you can't, not directly. Although the KTM trains from the north and south criss-cross Peninsular Malaysia, there unfortunately dont't go to Kuantan.

Conference Venue, Accomodation & Fee

Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort

Hyatt Regency Resort is a luxury hotel on the beachfront of Teluk Cempedak, just three miles north of Kuantan is the official venue of the conference. The traditional kampong (Malaysian Village) designed provides first-class accommodation with panoramic views of the South China Sea. This hotel provides a selection of restaurants, pools with poolside bars, tennis courts and the Kuantan Spa Bayou.

Registration and Accomodation Fees

The conference registration fee is a package of a full board accomodation and conference fee per person (Twin Sharing) will be :

5 days and 4 nights will be USD 250

4 days and 3 nights will be USD 230

Change Of Venue For Area Conference

I am pleased to inform the above conference is confirmed to be held in Kuantan, Pahang Darul Makmur, Malaysia, and not in Johor Bahru as I mentioned in the previous newsletter. I am sorry about the changed of venue due to unforseen circumstances.

I would like to thank MAWAR of Johor for the preparation that they have made towards this conference and I would like to say thanks to WI of Pahang who is prepared to host this conference in short notice.

The Area Conference For SEA and FE with the theme "WOMEN WORLDWIDE - THE VOICE OF TODAY" is from 9 - 12 May 2009 inclusive.

On behalf of the orginizing committee, I'm taking this opportunity to invite ACWW members to the conference.

Associated Country Women Of The World (ACWW)

About ACWW

ACWW is the largest international organisation for rural women. It has a uniquely down-to-earth approach, offering mutual support, friendship and practical help to its members.

The organisation has a membership of nine million through its 365 Member Societies in over 70 countries.

ACWW's Aims & Objectives

TO RAISE the standard of living of rural women and families through education, training and community development programmes.

TO PROVIDE practical support to its members and help them set up income-generating schemes.

TO GIVE rural women a voice at international level through its links with UN agencies.

How it Began

LATE 19th CENTURY – rural women's groups were set up independently. Communication between groups enabled more country women to come together in friendship and work towards similar goals.

LONDON APRIL 1929 – first International Conference of Rural Women – 46 women from 24 countries attended four-day conference.

VIENNA 1930 – conference decision by the International Council of Women to form a 'Liaison Committee' of rural women's organisations.

STOCKHOLM 1933 – the committee became the Associated Country Women of the World.

How ACWW is Financed

ACWW is entirely dependent for income on annual dues paid by Member Societies and Individual Member donations. It receives no government funding.

PENNIES FOR FRIENDSHIP, donated voluntarily by members and Member Societies, are the main source of ACWW's income.

DUES (payable per annum by Member Societies and Individual Members). All categories of membership receive a copy of The Countrywoman magazine quarterly.

DONATIONS AND GRANTS are welcome to enable our valuable work to be maintained.

ACWW FUNDS

ACWW supports development programmes through these funds:

GENERAL PROJECTS FUND: Family planning initiatives, HIV/AIDS awareness, small business schemes, skill training.

WATER FOR ALL FUND: Clean water and sanitation projects providing: water tanks, bore wells, hand pumps, education and training, programmes to improve health and hygiene.

WOMEN FEED THE WORLD: Subsistence food production and co-operatives, training in farming techniques, credit savings schemes.

LADY ABERDEEN SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Scholarships, courses in home economics, courses in welfare and citizenship for leaders in rural communities.

ELSIE ZIMMERN MEMORIAL FUND: Advanced training in organisation and leadership.

NUTRITION EDUCATION FUND: Good nutrition, improved hygiene, food production.

The above scholarships are available only to members of ACWW organisations
